Take a peek in to the colourful world of Somerset artist and illustrator Cathy Cornish
Hi there! I’m Cathy and I create colourful, statement art prints and greetings cards here in Street, Somerset. I’ve always been creative but only started my small business in lockdown. I have loved developing digital drawing skills which I use for the majority of my work now, alongside acrylic painting and the occasional bit of lino-printing.
How would you describe your style?
I would describe my style as bold, colourful and sometimes quite abstract. My favourite projects are the abstract ones where I’m not overthinking and everything just flows naturally and magically appears on the page, almost like an out-of-body experience. I find when I try too hard, things just don’t turn out how I want them to.
Where do you look for inspiration?
I can get inspiration from anywhere really, sometimes just a colour combination on someone’s jumper! I’d say I mainly focus on the natural world at the moment - lots of flowers, foliage and animals.
What is your advice for people who want to start crafting / selling?
Absolutely go for it! Arts and crafts is such an amazing way to spend your time. If you’re thinking of selling your work then I would encourage you to try it. I never thought anyone would want to buy the things I was making but was surprised to find they really did. If you don’t put yourself out there then you’ll never know. Just be sure to make things you like and your audience will find you, don’t try to make for a specific audience.
Do you take custom requests?
Yes, I do! I undertake bespoke illustrations, paintings and I’m a trained graphic designer too so don’t hesitate to drop me a line :)
