NATALIE WILLIAMS

Marvelous Maker of many things (too many projects on the go at once!)

Hi,

I'm Natalie and you will see me in the Emporium most days, I've always been creative since I was young (thanks to my mum!).

  • Why do you craft / make?

I like to make things mostly as I like to keep my fingers busy, and I think I would get bored if I didn’t create / invent.

  • What are your favourite projects?

I don’t have any favourites but I like to make things that are colourful and quirky.

  • What do you do to keep yourself, space and time organised?

I have a craft room but it’s very messy, I try to spend at least an hour a day creating even if its crochet in front of the TV in the evening.

  • What are your can’t live without craft essentials?

Glitter fabric, it’s amazing

  • How would you describe your style?

Bright, colourful, whimsical

  • Are there any crafters / designers that you look up to?

I admire people who have been able to put a lot of time into their businesses and they have taken off as a result, but no one in particular.

  • Where do you look for inspiration?

Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, as well as everyday walking the dog scenery.

  • We live in such a mass-produced society, why should people continue to make things by hand?

Buying handmade makes people feel more appreciated, I believe. Anyone can go to a shop instore or online and buy a mass-produced item that has no meaning. If you buy something that is handmade the artist that made it has spent their time and effort creating the product and I think people prefer it.

Handmade doesn’t necessarily mean expensive either, although crafters have to price for all the material used and the time it took to make the item and sometimes that puts customers off.

  • What is your advice for people who want to start crafting / selling?

Crafting keeps your mind busy away from everyday stress, and can help with depression and anxiety.  Keep persevering and have patience, sometimes it can a while before your products start selling instore or online. Research into any platforms you can use as a platform to get yourself out there.
